For Art's Sake: Professional Courtesy

Comic-Con week continues: These past FOR ART'S SAKE episodes center towards fan attitudes towards Pro comics artists at conventions.

1991 San Diego Comic-Con Badge

Like the souvenir book, San Diego Comic-Con (Comic-Con International) Used to accept submissions from any artist for their badges, and they produced a number of designs each year, This is one of mine.

San Diego Memory:My Character by Sergio Aragones!

This is probably the first drawing on this site that wasn't done by me. Until ten or so years ago, I was a yearly attendee of THE SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON (COMIC-CON INTERNATIONAL). In 1992, I met the great SERGIO ARAGONES, famed for his artwork in MAD MAGAZINE and his own comic book series (which has some unexplained connection to Mark Evanier) GROO THE WANDERER. Sergio was kind enough to make me this sketch of Groo, with a surprise appearance of my own "Art" character from my COMICS BUYER'S GUIDE strips. And frankly, I can't blame Art for looking nervous! Thanks again for the happy memory, Mr. Aragones!

For Art's Sake: Two Types of Cons

Published in THE COMIC BUYER'S GUIDE #1675..I actually forgot to post this one last month! When I used to be able to go to the Comic-Con International convention in San Diego, It went from BIG to MASSIVE in the space of those years, enough to actually have them expand the already humungous convention hall!(The yearly convention IS a big source of money for the city!) The thing is STILL growing to the point where the membership tickets sell out DAYS after they're put up for sale (AND THAT'S LIKE AT LEAST SIX MONTHS IN ADVANCE!! I was wondering if there could be any alternatived to those that couldn't get a ticket or even afford then travel...But then again, I wouldn't be surprized if the powers that be would find some way to shoot that down!

For Art's Sake: Just In Time For San Diego!

My latest FOR ART'S SAKE from COMICS BUYER'S GUIDE#1669. There's been talk about the biggest industry convention, COMIC-CON INTERNATIONAL (the SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON)actually relocating to another part of California after 2012.(After 40 YEARS!) From what I understand things are still "in negotiation" right now. This is MY take..

My Comic-Con International San Diego Souvenir Book Gallery

With the 40th Anniversary of Comic-Con International (San Diego Comic Con) just around the bend at this writing, I'd figure I'd acknowlege it by posting the Artwork I submitted to it thru the years. I was a steady Con-goer for about ten years until changes in my circumstances made it no longer feasible (That's life) but I still follow it, even though it's not quite the same as actually experiencing it. Well, at bleast I don't have to fight off the crowds.
All in all, despite what they say about how the con has grown these into more of a hollywood trade show, I think any budding cartoonist should at least go to the con once. I've met many nice and supportive people, saw a lot of great things, had a lot of great times..Hopefully I'll be able to make it there again someday..

Comic-Con Again!

Even though I couldn't attend the SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON INTERNATIONAL last month, i DID contributr a drawing to the yearly Souvenir Book, which made its FULL-COLOR debut this year.. Forgive me if the art seems crooked, the book was a thick one to fit on my scanner.

San Diego Comic-Con International.

In past years, I used to attend THE SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON (COMIC-CON INTERNATIONAL)
What a blast. Met a lot of great people and always something happening. I'd even contribute to the program book (AND GET A WHOLE PAGE TO MYSELF!)
Sadly. times change, and I haven't been able to make the trip for several years now (Yeah, boo hoo hoo) I still foloow it as best I can thru the web, and I even did a recent commentary in my strip FOR ART'S SAKE which recently appeared in COMICS BUYER'S GUIDE #1657.
Hope thos of you who went had a great time!
