TOUGHPIGS Sesame Street/Comics Mashup Contest Entries: The Runners-Up

The Top Muppet fan website I often do artwork for, TOUGHPIGS, ran a contest for the best artwork combining SESAME STREET Muppets with elements of comic book /strip characters. Twenty artists entered around forty pieces and I contributed twelve myself. The runners-up were announced on the site today and these are my pieces that made that  category..(I'll post any further winning pieces, if any, in a later post.)

For Art's Sake: Good God, Charlie Brown!

I know PEANUTS satires are nothing new.( this one appeared in the COMICS BUYER'S GUIDE in 1997) I'm not sure how I came up with this one, but I do know that although I thought PEANUTS was a good strip, the treatment of Charlie Brown often was a bit too much for me to take. (maybe due to I got a TON of that similar treatment in real-life during my own childhood) I've always wondered (or wished) what would happen If good ol' Charlie Brown ever reached his limit. (which sadly, seems to be happening with real-life people way too often these days) In any case, since the PEANUTS movie is coming soon…I really liked how I drew the last panel, with my talking easel Monet giving that Schulz-like smirk.

Roger Dahl's ZERO GRAVITY

One  comic I stumbled on while glancing  thru of all things, THE JAPAN TIMES a couple years back, was a delightful weekly feature called ZERO GRAVITY, chronicalling the misadventures of Larry and Lilly, an american married couple living in Japan, dealing with the culture, food, and living. The strip is written and drawn by a very talented cartoonist named Roger Dahl, who also does Japan-based editorial cartoons for TJT as well as his regular strip. Roger has finally put out a collection of over 300 of his cartoons in a new book titled COMIC JAPAN. The book is excellent and I highly recommend it. You can order it thru Amazon, or check out the latest cartoons plus archives at the JAPAN TIMES website. The drawing below is my take on Roger's main characters, Larry and Lilly, and the older woman with then is their elderly neighbor JUNKO KOYAMA. You can also check out Roger's Japan Times cartoons and other works at http://www.dahlcartoons.com

Pogo Meets Kermit

Two classic favorites of mine finally get together. And I damn well know my artwork is nowhere NEAR the league of master cartoonist Walt Kelly. Kelly was unrivaled when it came to the inkbrush.

From 2004: Bill Holbrook, creator of the long-running webcomic KEVIN AND KELL (and the syndicated newspaper strips ON THE FASTRACK and SAFE HAVENS) offered fans to sumbit artwork for his K&K compliation book STRAIGHT OUTA COMPUTERS. This is the page my submission appeared on, scanned straight out of the book. (My Art is the black and white strip on the bottom of the page)

For Art's Sake: KABOOM! Pt. 3

The third of my three strips for KABOOM! Though he didn't make many appearances during the last years of the Comics Buyers Guide strips, (A lot due to CBG going from weekly to monthly) Monet was always one of my favorite characters.

For Art's Sake: KABOOM Part1

Back in 1993, I contributed (along with some other COMICS BUYERS GUIDE cartoonists) to a comics newspaper called "KABOOM!" (no relation to BOOM Studios) I decided to try my FOR ART'S SAKE characters in situations outside the norm of my COMICS BUYERS GUIDE material and drew up three two page strips, which were reformatted to fill three TABLOID-sized pages. I also tried to go for more detailed artwork (apparently my inking at the time was going thru a period of trying to combine Walt Kelly with Gilbert Shelton) KABOOM only lasted one issue, but it was a thrill seeing my strip take up three entire HUGE pages. The strip below is the first of the three. For posting purposes, this is in its original drawn two-page format.
