Salem News: Combined Stories

This is kind of a two in one. On Monday the SALEM NEWS ran a story on their front page about local legislators who get reimbursed for their travel expenses, and on page two there was a story about legislators complaining about an automatic gas tax hike. While mulling these stories over, somehow they suddenly seemed to fit together. This is the resulting cartoon, as it appeared in the 06/25/2014 SALEM NEWS.

Cat Inna Hat

You were expecting Mike Myers?

Salem News: Pounding The Pavement

Everybody agrees the work needs to be finished, but the business owners would prefer it waits until AFTER tourist season, given their livelihoods have been CONSIDERABLY endangered already by what's been done so far. My cartoon as it was published in the 06/16/2014 SALEM NEWS.

Making A Gookie

Another old character concept. Back in the day, I was a big Marx Brothers
afficiando. (Though I preferred the original edgy paramount films to the way softened MGM ones) And yes, Harpo was my favorite. I actually fooled around with this concept based on Harpo I called "The Gookie", which was basically Harpo pared down to little more than his props. Gookie could produce any prop out himself, or contort his body as needed, (Though not to the degree of PLASTIC MAN, or like that) You never saw any more "body" than his head. Bizarre at least, but only short-term appeal at most. Word of advice, though: If you ever come across a copy of Harpo's Biography; HARPO SPEAKS! Read It! Harpo's real life was even weirder and more fun than the actual movies he starred in!
